JOHN S. SPONG -
The former bishop of Newark, NJ, and one of the world’s foremost liberal theologians, John S. Spong is on the very fringe of Biblical revisionism. The author of best-selling books such as Why Christianity Must Change or Die, Rescuing the Bible from Fundamentalism, and Living in Sin: A Bishop Rethinks Human Sexuality, Bishop Spong has challenged orthodox Christianity, rejected the notion of an anthropomorphic God, and professes a nearly agnostic interpretation of Scripture that goes beyond the liberalism of Dr. Crew or Bishop Robinson. He is also among the foremost advocates of gay rights in The Episcopal Church (or any church), and in 1989 ordained Robert Williams, the first openly gay, noncelibate priest to serve in any mainline Christian denomination. In 1994, Bishop Spong authored the controversial “Statement of Koinonia,” which declared to the church that homosexuality, like all sexuality, was a precious gift from God.
